Founders’ Memorial Architectural Design Competition Receives Strong Response of 193 Entries

Strong support for Bay East Garden

SINGAPORE, 02 MAY 2019 – Architects, both local and worldwide, have submitted their design proposals for the Founders’ Memorial, in response to the architectural design competition which was launched earlier this year. The competition attracted a total of 193 submissions, of which five have been shortlisted to proceed to the next stage of the competition.

Update on Architectural Design Competition

2          Launched in January 2019, the Founders’ Memorial international architectural design competition is held with the aim to seek out the best design of the upcoming landmark – one which honours Singapore’s founding generation of leaders, and celebrates the ideals and values upon which Singapore is built.

3          Stage One of the competition, which lasted for 12 weeks till 5 April, saw a total of 193 submissions from foreign and local firms, out of which five have been shortlisted by the Jury Panel to proceed to Stage Two of the competition. As the judging process for Stage One was anonymous, the identities of the entrants were only revealed to the Jury Panel after the decision was made on the shortlisted designs. The five shortlisted firms (in alphabetical order) are:

a)    8DGE Design in collaboration with Ong Ching Ying,

b)    Cox Architecture in collaboration with Architects 61,

c)    DP Architects,

d)    Johnson Pilton Walker, and

e)    Kengo Kuma & Associates in collaboration with K2LD Architects.

4          Mr Lee Tzu Yang, Chairman of the Founders’ Memorial Committee and Jury Panel said: “We have a strong and creative response to the Open Design Competition, and we would like to thank the participating architectural teams for their support and enthusiasm, and the effort taken to come forward with such good quality design concepts. Besides Singapore, we had many entries from overseas, for example, from USA, Hong Kong and even Latvia. We are excited to have the shortlisted firms further develop their design concepts in the next stage of the competition, to translate these concepts and the vision of the Founders’ Memorial into more detailed designs.”

Public Engagement Workshops at the end of Stage One (May)

5          Public engagement workshops will be organised on the weekend of 25 – 26 May 2019 at the National Museum of Singapore. Singaporeans who participated in previous engagements on the Founders’ Memorial will be invited to have an exclusive peek at the five shortlisted conceptual designs, and offer their views on the visitor experience as potential visitors of the memorial.  Other members of the public who are keen to also join the engagement workshops can email Founders_Memorial@nhb.gov.sg. Due to the limited capacity of the venue, registration for the sessions is required and on a first come first served basis. The public feedback will be collated and given to the shortlisted teams for their consideration.

Stage Two of the Architectural Design Competition

6          Stage Two of the competition will see the shortlisted firms refining and advancing the design ideas established in their Stage One submissions. The five final designs submitted at the end of Stage Two will be made available for public viewing and further feedback through a roving exhibition at the end of 2019. The public feedback will be provided to the Jury Panel for their consideration. The Jury Panel will evaluate all five designs and choose a winning design by January/ February 2020.

About the Founders’ Memorial

The Founders’ Memorial will commemorate the values and ideals exemplified by the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew and Singapore’s first generation leaders, as well as other key personalities who played important roles in Singapore’s path to independence, and in the early years of Singapore’s nation-building process. The Memorial’s narrative will take a values-driven approach as guided by its concept, which was derived from the Founders’ Memorial Committee’s engagement with Singaporeans in 2015 – 2017.

Envisioned as an integrated gallery and gardens experience at the Bay East Garden, the Memorial aims to both commemorate how independent Singapore came to be, and inspire Singaporeans to commit themselves to contribute towards the nation’s future.

The Memorial is currently in its second stage of development, and the Committee will continue to engage Singaporeans to gather their views on its design. More information on the Founders’ Memorial is available at foundersmemorial.sg.
